Energy & Power Generation
Why Drones in Energy and Power Generation?
Main applications:
- Topographic mapping and land inspection
- Remote monitoring
- Plant Design, Build & Execution control
- Periodic monitoring and system maintenance
- Security and emergency response
The development of the global energy market and the transition toward a diversified mix requires sophisticated technologies to maintain complex generation and storage infrastructures. Drones have become the most efficient solution for inspecting and monitoring hydroelectric, nuclear, biomass, geothermal, and thermal power plants, as well as Oil & Gas facilities, alongside the continuously expanding wind, photovoltaic, and agrivoltaic systems worldwide.
Equipped with advanced sensors and eliminating the need for scaffolding or platforms, UAVs can detect fluid and gas leaks, electrical faults, and structural anomalies. By processing this critical data through AI modules and thanks to the Digital Twin of the structure, facility vulnerabilities are mapped with millimeter precision.
Furthermore, the integration of OGI (Optical Gas Imaging) sensors allows for the real-time detection of fugitive emissions of gas invisible to the naked eye.
For photovoltaic facilities, drones equipped with thermal cameras quickly identify defects at the cell and module level—detecting heat losses, hotspots, and non-functioning strings.
Drone solutions do not only concern the Utilities market, with its large onshore and offshore installations, but also the Commercial & Industrial sector with “roof-top” systems, as well as agricultural and residential applications.
Beyond outdoor monitoring, drone applications extend to critical indoor and confined-space inspections. In addition to the quadcopters already available, the MAVTech indoor drones, currently under development, are specifically designed to navigate GNSS-denied environments and inspect internal turbine components, pipelines, boiler rooms, and chimneys.
Aerial surveys can also extend to right-of-way and perimeter monitoring, tracking intrusions, potential operational hazards, and vegetation encroachment.
By delivering drastically reduced inspection windows, facilitating predictive maintenance processes, and eliminating the need for infrastructure shutdowns, drone deployments prove strategic in terms of both safety and cost reduction: maximizing asset uptime, lowering Operations & Maintenance costs, and mitigating hazardous man-hours for field personnel.
